چکیده

A simple and practical all-fiber approach for realizing ultrafast optical differentiators is proposed and numerically tested. In particular, it is demonstrated that first-order and second-order temporal differentiation of an arbitrary optical waveform can be realized by simply propagating the waveform through a suitable uniform longperiod grating photoinscribed in the core of an optical fiber (LPFG structure). An alternative design based on a π phaseshifted LPFG is shown to be especially advantageous in terms of stability and robustness against variations in the grating parameters. Our results have confirmed the feasibility of the proposed approach for processing optical signals with temporal features in the sub-picosecond range (corresponding bandwidths of as much as a few terahertz).

Ultrafast all-optical Nth-order differentiator based on chirped fiber Bragg gratings.

In this letter we present a technique for the implementation of Nth-order ultrafast temporal differentiators. This technique is based on two oppositely chirped fiber Bragg gratings in which the grating profile maps the spectral response of the Nth-order differentiator. Examples of 1(st), 2(nd), and 4(th) order differentiators are designed and numerically simulated.

Analysis of optical response of long period fiber gratings to nm-thick thin-film coatings

We have theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that the resonant wavelength of long period fiber gratings (LPG) can be shifted by a large magnitude by coating with only a nm-thick thin-film that has a refractive index higher than that of the glass cladding. The resonant wavelength shift can result from either the variation of the thickness of the film and/or the variation of its refracti...

Simultaneous ultrafast optical pulse train bursts generation and shaping based on Fourier series developments using superimposed fiber Bragg gratings.

We propose an all-fiber method for the generation of ultrafast shaped pulse train bursts from a single pulse based on Fourier Series Developments (FDSs). The implementation of the FSD based filter only requires the use of a very simple non apodized Superimposed Fiber Bragg Grating (S-FBG) for the generation of the Shaped Output Pulse Train Burst (SOPTB). In this approach, the shape, the period ...

Information processing with longitudinal spectral decomposition of ultrafast pulses.

We describe what we believe to be novel methods for waveform synthesis and detection relying on longitudinal spectral decomposition of subpicosecond optical pulses. Optical processing is performed in both all-fiber and mixed fiber-free-space systems. Demonstrated applications include ultrafast optical waveform synthesis, microwave spectrum analysis, and high-speed electrical arbitrary waveform ...

Tunable optical fiber devices based on broadband long-period gratings and pumped microfluidics

This letter describes classes of tunable microfluidic fiber ~mFF! devices that use specially designed long-period gratings in which the phase matching condition is satisfied over a wide spectral range. Dynamic tuning is achieved by electrowetting-based pumping of microfluidic plugs back and forth over the gratings. As specific examples, we demonstrate dynamically tunable broadband attenuators a...
